Quick Facts
Improve freight mobility and enhance emergency response in the Blair-Hylebos Peninsula area of the Port of Tacoma Manufacturing Industrial Center
Important arterial serving the Port of Tacoma Manufacturing Industrial Center (it is the main corridor on the Blair-Hylebos Peninsula, an essential emergency access route, and a vital freight corridor for the Port carrying between 4 million tons and 10 million tons of freight every year)
The previous Taylor Way pavement wasn’t designed to carry heavy truck loads – truck and rail conflicts were common along the route, including 12 at-grade rail crossings between SR 509 and E. 12th Street
Results
Replaced failing pavement with concrete roadway to handle the amount of daily freight frequented along the corridor.
Provided continuous pedestrian facilities along the corridor
Improved response times for emergencies and reduced freight delays
Our Work
Provided traffic signal design with emergency vehicle pre-emption for four intersections: E. 11th Street/Alexander Avenue E., E. 11th Street/Taylor Way, Taylor Way/Lincoln Avenue, and Taylor Way/SR 509
Evaluated and designed the corridor lighting and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) infrastructure along the Taylor Way corridor; installed fiber optic cable for signal interconnect and devices, including cameras and blank-out signs, and undergrounding existing fire department fiber optic cable while minimizing connectivity downtime
Analyzed potential improvements to SR 509 due to the expected future traffic growth on the corridor and in the region
Evaluated traffic operation performance and documented the roadway characteristics as well as safety data
