The OR 217 signs, which were recently switched on, are the second in a series of ODOT projects using new technologies to help drivers make safe decisions by providing real time information to travelers. The information will automatically update every minute.
The RealTime system on OR 217 includes advisory speed signs, which display an advisory speed based on the traffic ahead. The advisory speeds will change as real-time conditions change. The signs will give drivers a heads-up to slow down before they reach a problem area, helping reduce rear-end crashes and the congestion they cause. As traffic slows, the signs will display a lower advised speed. The advised speed will continue to decrease the closer the driver approaches the backup. When traffic is flowing normally, the signs will be off.
The system also includes traveler information signs, which alert drivers to crashes, congestion, road conditions, closures and other traffic-related information, giving drivers the ability to make travel decisions in real time. The signs will tell you where the backup begins verses the location of the crash that is causing the backup.
In addition travel time signs display estimated travel times to key destinations so that drivers can plan their arrival time or consider an alternate route.”
